Wildlife & Big Game Safaris

Uganda's savannah parks are emptier than Kenya's or Tanzania's and just as productive, while the boat cruises give you something the Mara cannot.

Uganda's case against Kenya and Tanzania

Uganda does not have the Serengeti migration and we will not pretend otherwise. What it has instead is space: on a morning game drive in Kidepo or the Ishasha sector you will frequently see no other vehicle at all, which changes the character of every sighting.

It also has water. The Kazinga Channel and the Victoria Nile deliver two-and three-hour boat cruises through the densest hippo and crocodile concentrations in Africa, with elephant and buffalo coming down to drink at eye level from the boat. No East African savannah park offers that.

The Big Five question

Uganda holds all five, but not in one park. Lion, elephant and buffalo are straightforward across Murchison and Queen Elizabeth. Leopard is present in both and in Lake Mburo, and seen most reliably on night drives.

Rhino is the one that needs planning: the entire national population lives at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, tracked on foot, which sits exactly halfway on the drive to Murchison Falls. Include Ziwa and a Uganda itinerary completes the Five.

How we route a wildlife trip

The efficient shape is a loop: Kampala north to Ziwa and Murchison, west and south through Kibale to Queen Elizabeth, then Bwindi and back via Lake Mburo. Ten days covers it at a civilised pace and that is our 10-Day Grand Expedition.

If you want Kidepo (and any second-time visitor should), we fly you in rather than lose two days each way on the road.
