Cultural & Community Tours

Cultural tourism goes wrong when it becomes a show staged for a vehicle. These are the visits we are comfortable selling: community-run, community-paid, and honest about what they are.

How we choose cultural experiences

The test we apply is simple: who owns it and where does the money land. The Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary walk is run by a community association that funds local schools from the fees. The Batwa Trail in Mgahinga is guided by Batwa men who lived in that forest before it became a national park. Both pass.

What we avoid is the roadside performance staged for a passing vehicle, where a village is paid a token and the operator keeps the margin. If a visit feels like a zoo, it is not on our itineraries.

The Batwa story, told straight

The Batwa lived as hunter-gatherers in the forests of south-west Uganda for millennia. When Bwindi and Mgahinga were gazetted as national parks in 1991 to protect the gorillas, they were evicted with no land and no compensation, and became one of the most marginalised communities in the country.

The Batwa Trail and the Batwa Experience exist as a route back to some economic footing. They are not comfortable visits and they are not meant to be, but they are led by the community, paid to the community, and worth your time.

Buganda and the kingdoms

Uganda still has its traditional kingdoms, and Buganda is the largest. The Kasubi Tombs in Kampala (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) hold four kabakas under an immense thatched dome, and the guides there are Buganda royal servants rather than tourism staff.

The Uganda Museum, oldest in East Africa, is the best single hour for context on the country's fifty-odd ethnic groups before you head west.
