One free day, well spent
For business travellers, long layovers and the day before your flight home: everything here works as a single day out of Entebbe or Kampala.
Mabamba Swamp. A dawn boat across the bay from Entebbe and a canoe into the papyrus to look for shoebill, the single most distinctive bird in Africa, and Mabamba is among the most reliable places on earth to find one. Back at your hotel by mid-morning.
Alternatively the Entebbe Botanical Gardens with a birding guide, or the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre if you have children with you.
Ngamba Island for the chimpanzee sanctuary and a day on Lake Victoria. Jinja for the Source of the Nile and grade three or grade five rafting, two hours each way on tarmac. Or Kampala properly: Kasubi Tombs, the Uganda Museum, the Gaddafi Mosque minaret and Owino market, ideally by boda-boda with a guide.
Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is a long day at roughly three hours each way, but tracking rhino on foot is worth it if wildlife is what you came for.
Lake Mburo is the closest national park to Entebbe at four to five hours, which makes an overnight genuinely worthwhile: an afternoon game drive, a night drive for leopard, a boat safari at dawn and back by evening.
Sipi Falls and a coffee farm on the slopes of Mount Elgon also work as a two-day run east, paired with the Source of the Nile on the way back.
