With children who are actually enjoying it

The age limits, plainly

Gorilla trekking is 15 and over. This is checked against passports at the briefing and there is no discretion whatsoever, and we ensure every age requirement is verified beforehand. Chimpanzee trekking in Kibale is 12 and over. Golden monkey tracking is 15 and over.

If your children are younger, we build the trip around what they can do, and arrange for the adults to trek in shifts if a gorilla permit still matters to you.

What works brilliantly with younger children

The Kazinga Channel and Victoria Nile boat cruises are the best family activity in Uganda: two hours, seated, with elephants and hippos at eye level and no difficult walking. Rhino tracking on foot at Ziwa has no minimum age and is the trip's highlight for most children.

Lake Mburo works well: short drives, guaranteed zebra and impala, horseback riding, and it is close enough to Entebbe to be a soft first or last stop. The Uganda Wildlife Education Centre in Entebbe is genuinely good and makes a fine arrival-day afternoon.

  • Boat cruises: Kazinga Channel, Victoria Nile (no age limit)
  • Ziwa rhino tracking on foot (no age limit)
  • Lake Mburo horseback and game drives
  • UWEC Entebbe on arrival day
  • Jinja rafting (grade three) for teenagers

Pacing and logistics

Uganda's driving distances are the real constraint with children. We cap transfer days at four to five hours where we can, break the long western leg at Lake Mburo, and fly families with young children between Entebbe and Bwindi rather than putting them through a ten-hour road day.

All our vehicles are private, so departure times, snack stops and an abandoned afternoon are entirely your call. Most lodges offer family rooms or interconnecting doubles; we confirm those before booking rather than on arrival.
