Where to track chimpanzees
Kibale Forest National Park is the destination that matters. It holds the highest density and diversity of primates in East Africa (thirteen species) and a chimpanzee community habituated over decades of research, with a high success rate on a standard trek.
Three alternatives are worth knowing about. Kyambura Gorge in Queen Elizabeth is dramatic scenery but a small, isolated community and a materially lower success rate. Budongo Forest near Murchison Falls is a genuine option if you are already on the northern circuit. Ngamba Island on Lake Victoria is a sanctuary for rescued chimps rather than wild tracking; a good half-day from Entebbe, but a different experience.
Permits and timings
Kibale runs standard treks twice daily from the Kanyanchu Visitor Centre, morning and afternoon, in small groups, with one hour at the community once it is found.
- Chimpanzee trekking permit: $250 per person
- Chimpanzee habituation experience: $300 per person, full day
- Minimum age: 12 years, three years lower than gorilla trekking
- Typical time in the forest: 2 to 4 hours including the hour of viewing
The habituation experience
For $50 more than a standard permit, the habituation experience puts you with researchers from before dawn until the chimps nest in the late afternoon. You watch a community wake, travel, feed, hunt and argue rather than dropping in for an hour.
It departs before sunrise, runs into the evening, and is limited to a small number of visitors per day. For anyone genuinely interested in primate behaviour it is the best-value permit in Uganda, and it is a rewarding, full day.
What trekking chimps is actually like
Chimpanzees move fast and high. You will usually hear them first (pant-hoots carry a long way through the forest), then spend the hour with your neck craned, watching a party feed in the canopy, before they drop to the ground and move on faster than you can follow.
Terrain is far gentler than Bwindi: broadly flat forest trails rather than mountain scrambling. Bring a camera that copes with low light and high contrast, because the canopy is dark and the sky behind it is not.
How it fits an itinerary
Kibale sits naturally between Queen Elizabeth National Park and the road west, which is why both our 5-Day Primates & Wilderness Explorer and 10-Day Grand Uganda Expedition include it. A half-day guided walk in the Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary pairs well the same afternoon and channels its revenue directly into local guiding cooperatives.
