Where the money actually goes

Three things separate a luxury Uganda itinerary from a mid-range one, and lodge tier is the least important of them.

First, flying. Entebbe to Bwindi is a ten-hour drive or a ninety-minute flight to Kisoro. Over a nine-day trip, flying the long legs returns two to three full days to you. Second, a dedicated private guide who stays with you throughout rather than a driver handed over between regions. Third, permit redundancy (a second gorilla permit on a different day), so a hard trek is not your only attempt.

The lodges worth the money

Bwindi has a genuinely world-class top end: Bwindi Lodge and Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge at Nkuringo both sit at a standard that would hold up anywhere in East Africa. Apoka Safari Lodge in Kidepo is the most remarkable location in the country. Mweya Safari Lodge commands the Kazinga Channel.

We hold trade-rate accounts directly with all of them, which is why our luxury quotes are frequently below what an overseas agent charges for the identical room.

What luxury does not fix

Gorilla trekking is the same steep, muddy walk regardless of what you paid. The permit is $800 for everyone and the hour is the same hour. Roads inside the parks are rough in every price bracket.

We would rather say that plainly than have you arrive expecting a Botswana-style bush experience. Uganda's value is the primates and the density of things to do, not polish.
