Central Uganda (Nakasongola)
The only place in Uganda to track wild rhino on foot
Uganda's rhino were poached to extinction by the early 1980s. Ziwa is the reintroduction, a 70 square kilometre sanctuary on the Kampala–Gulu road where a founder population has grown steadily and where every rhino in the country now lives.
Tracking is done on foot with a ranger, which is the reason to come. You leave the vehicle and walk in to within thirty metres of animals that weigh two tonnes, in open bush, with nothing between you and them. It is the most physically immediate wildlife encounter in Uganda.
The sanctuary also runs an early-morning canoe trip on its swamp for shoebill, and a night walk. Because it sits almost exactly halfway to Murchison Falls, it costs an itinerary nothing to include.
Year-round. Tracking goes out every morning and afternoon in all weather.
About three hours north of Kampala on the Gulu highway, 176km, on good tarmac. Always combined with Murchison Falls.
